Symptoms
Cancer
can spread to the bones, lungs, brain or
liver. The symptoms you experience
determine the organ where the cancer has
spread. If you feel bone pain, then it is
possible that cancer has spread to the
bones. If there is shortness of breathing,
then possibly cancer cells have reached
the lungs. The possibility of liver
metastases is indicated by lack of
appetite and weight loss. Headaches or
neurological pain indicate the possibility
of neurological metastases.
Take
note of the word "possibility."
Experiencing any of the symptoms is not a
conclusive indication of metastatic breast
cancer. Once detected, your doctor will
direct you to undergo some tests like bone
scan, CAT scan, chest x-ray and blood
tests to confirm.
Treatment
Most
treatments for this type of cancer focus
on lessening the symptoms. One may undergo
radiation therapy, the purpose of which is
to reduce the size of the cancer and
alleviate pain. But if the cancer is of
the more advanced stage, chemotherapy is
recommended. This is because in
chemotherapy, the entire body is affected,
making it easier to attack cancer cells
that affect more than one part of the
body.

In choosing the treatment plan, it is best
that you and your doctor come to an
agreement. For example, if you do not want
aggressive treatment, let your doctor know
of your reasons. He, in turn, can give you
a realistic assessment of your health
status and what treatments that he deems
would be best for you. Once treated, he
will also inform you of how your body
responds to it, and maybe change the
treatment plan if he believes that another
treatment is best suited for your case.
Because some cancer cells become resistant
to some treatments, doctors tend to change
medication midstream.
The
goal of metastatic breast cancer treatment
is to provide for relief from the
symptoms. But the most important part of
the treatment is coping with it. With
doctors to support you and your loving
family and friends around you, this will
not be too difficult. Remember that no two
women are exactly alike when it comes to
responding to treatment. Always think
positive. And learn to live life to the
fullest.
